MetenaMiCA: the EU crypto regulation explained
The European regulation on crypto-asset markets, which governs issuers and service providers. Good regulatory news improves the quality of a thesis, not the timing of an entry.
Definition
MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets) is the European regulation covering crypto-assets not already subject to existing financial rules. It has applied since June 2024 to stablecoin issuers and since December 2024 to service providers, with a transition period depending on the country.
For an individual, it mostly changes how exchanges are supervised: mandatory authorisation, segregation of client assets, rules on conflicts of interest and on advertising. Stablecoin issuers must hold reserves and publish information.
MiCA does not guarantee an asset’s value and makes no investment safe. An authorised exchange is still exposed to the market risk of what it offers.
Worked example
A thesis that bets on adoption by European institutions can treat MiCA coming into force as a favourable fact. It strengthens the thesis, but says nothing about whether it is a good time to buy.
