Definition
A spot ETF is an exchange-traded fund that buys and holds the asset itself. Buying a share means holding bitcoin indirectly, from an ordinary brokerage account, without managing a crypto wallet.
When investors buy more shares than they sell, the fund has to buy bitcoin: these net inflows are followed as an indicator of demand from institutions and financial advisers.
A single day’s flows are noisy. Part of them come from arbitrage between the fund and futures contracts, which expresses no view on the price. Trends over several weeks say more.
Worked example
Spot bitcoin ETFs were approved in the United States in January 2024, then spot ether ETFs in July 2024. A thesis that relies on institutional adoption can follow their monthly flows as a progress indicator, and make them one of its invalidation conditions.
